Spectacle!

Monday, April 9th, 2007

I just found out about the indofunk network, the group that is sponsoring this art/music event, and it seems like they do a lot of interesting East Coast shows. Personally, I am a huge fan of artist/musician collaborations — like the Velvet Underground working with Warhol, or my current favorite band of visual artists-turned-indie rockers, TV On The Radio.

If you are in the area, you should definitely check out this event. I would love to see more alternative stuff happening in my favorite beachy paradise. :)

So, that Rock Star: Supernova thing…

Friday, April 6th, 2007

Having finally gotten caught up on Rock Star: Supernova, I can honestly say that Ocean City has displayed a certain amount of genuine rock star cred on the national level. No, really — Phil Richie, of the OC band Lennex, did a pretty good job making the whole production look darn silly.

What happened? Well, the boy turned in some good performances, and got kicked off — to the puzzlement of those fans who missed the online part of the show, where we learn that Phil is not a big fan of Supernova, and is in fact on the show to promote his own band. Like, um, all of the contestants? Well, that or some of them think Supernova rocks, but I kind of hope not. Nope, the only difference is that Phil was honest about it, in a way that would be stupid in a regular-job situation but is pretty cool and brave in a rock’n'roll situation.

So, go Lennex! Given that they have the most Google hits of any OC band I’ve looked up, I’d say that the strategy was pretty sound.* I have sent Lennex a message asking for a blog interview and haven’t heard back, though, so if you’d like to see their exclusive thoughts in this space, go bother them on myspace about it.

* well, except for the part where the rest of us were stuck with Zayra for another week. That part was lame.
