About Ocean City

Ocean City, Maryland is a community located in Worcester County, Maryland (extreme south-eastern Maryland). Ocean City has become a popular destination for tourists in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. It attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors during the summer. The community itself has 7,100 residents and the community is considerably more quiet during the off-season.

Ocean City has a range of attractions. There are over 125 hotels in Ocean City, which allow guests to enjoy the natural beauty of the beach or the nature trails in the immediate vicinity. Ocean City's famous Boardwalk is home to Amusement Parks and Mini Golf, water parks, all kinds of sporting events, Arcades, Beaches, and Restaurants. There are twelve golf courses in Ocean City, and there are many popular restaurants and shopping areas. There are also several state parks nearby, including Assateague State Park. Ocean City welcomes and plans events for people of all ages.

History and Geography

History

Ocean City is Maryland's only coastal community, situated on a barrier island that, until the mid-1800s, was a barren place attracting only a few fishermen who came over from the mainland on small row boats. In August 1933, a violent four-day storm hit Ocean City and cut an inlet through Assateague Island, linking the ocean with the bay. Engineers made the inlet at the south end of Ocean City permanent. The inlet soon brought a new industry to Ocean City – sportfishing. In 1934, the first white marlin was caught off the coast and Ocean City claimed the title of " White Marlin Capital of the World." The once humble fishing village that covered only a few blocks of land now stretches 10 miles long.

Located in Worcester County, Maryland (extreme south-eastern Maryland), Ocean City's main industries are tourism and fishing. Modern hotels and deluxe condominiums are now a part of the landscape.

Geography

Ocean City is located at 38°23'29" North, 75°4'11" West (38.391526, -75.069712).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 94.2 km² (36.4 mi²). 11.8 km² (4.6 mi²) of it is land and 82.4 km² (31.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 87.47% water.
