The End of an Era in Ocean City Md.

The historic Beach Plaza Hotel, a landmark in Ocean City Md since its construction in 1953, has been demolished. Purchased by Brice and Shirley Phillips in 1967, the 132 room hotel closed its doors in 2021.  The Beach Plaza Hotel was originally slated to become a Margaritaville-branded resort, but now although developers plan to construct a new hotel on the site, it will not be a Margaritaville, though the specific style and details of the project are yet to be determined.

The hotel, once a vibrant hub for families and vacationers, is now a pile of rubble. For over 70 years, it welcomed visitors and provided the setting for countless lasting memories. We’d love to hear your memories of the time you spent vacationing at Phillips Beach Plaza.

  1. Very sad to see. But thankfully what I got to see where people like the mayor and the governor sitting there with the regular people just having conversation eating. Local surfers body borders great place my memories thank you.

  2. So sad and same feelings as when the Broadripple boarding house came down. I lived in the Broadripple one summer while working for Phillips. Think it was the oldest building in ocean city. We all had the time our lives living on that block. It helped me get over the Grateful Dead’s breakup a band I followed around
I wonder what happened to the beautiful huge redwood bar top in the beach bar underneath the boardwalk. After a storm the bartop was found blocks north.
There used to be fox’s living under the Broadripples big porch. Anyway whenever I go back to oc it’s sad to see it change so much its losing its character, charm and starting too look like a very different city.

  3. My sister and I interviewed with Shirley and Bryce Phillips on the second floor of Phillips Crabhouse in spring, 1968. Subsequently, my first job in Ocean City, Maryland, was at the Beach Plaza hotel โ€“ I was a dishwasher for two weeks in the basement coffee shop.
I got fired by the manager, a school teacher from Arizona, Steve. He said I was too bossy, and I should find a more interdependent job. Thus the beginning of my two summer career at the diplomat hotel on 26th St. as a bellhop. Those were great times!

  4. I have been coming to OC since the 70’s always wanted to move there but never came true. Though it still feels like going home when I get thre

    • Same dream as my family. We’ve stayed all over o.c. for the past 40 years, each one a blessing. No matter where we roam OCMD is like our home. Many last minute stays to planned 2 week stays.๐Ÿฉต. From hotel rooms to condos to houses to Suites just being there can’t be beat. All future stays at 72 years old will be at the Choice Hotel ASCEND on Baltimore. Great place and great people. CAROL IS THE BEST! STRAIGHT FROM MY HEART. We can’t wait to return.
