Donations are urgently needed to support the national blood supply and weather-impacted areas in the Southeast
DELMARVA – As a second potentially devastating hurricane is poised to ravage the southern U.S., Blood Bank of Delmarva (BBD) is issuing an urgent appeal for blood donations. Donors are needed to ensure the availability of blood supplies for hospitals in weather-impacted areas, as well as to meet ongoing needs in the local region.
Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall on Florida’s west coast late Wednesday night, with the heavily populated city of Tampa Bay forecast to face a record-breaking storm surge of 10 to 15 feet. Experts say Milton is one of the strongest hurricanes ever recorded in the Atlantic.
Blood collections across the United States are facing significant disruption due to the ongoing weather emergencies impacting the Southeast. Severe weather has forced the closure of numerous blood centers, canceled scheduled blood drives, and restricted donor access in affected areas. These disruptions are expected to persist throughout the coming weeks and months, exacerbating the nation’s existing blood supply challenges.
As communities focus on recovery efforts, there is an urgent need for blood donations from unaffected areas to meet this critical demand. BBD is currently providing blood products to help support the national blood supply and stands ready to provide additional aid as needed in the coming days and weeks. To help meet the heightened need, BBD is calling on local residents to donate and help ensure a stable supply for patients in need during this critical time.
“This has been one of the most devastating hurricane seasons we have seen in years and a robust blood supply is essential for disaster preparedness and our country’s overall public health,” said Steve Corse, Executive Director at Blood Bank of Delmarva. “We’re calling on all eligible donors to help ensure a stable blood supply to support hospitals that rely on us, both locally and nationally, so our neighbors in the Southeast can focus on recovering from these storms without the burden of blood shortages. There’s no substitute for blood, and the need is critical, now more than ever.”
Blood donors can give every 56 days, and platelet donors can give twice per month. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently lifted several blood donor eligibility restrictions. To view current eligibility guidelines or make an appointment, visit delmarvablood.org or call 1-888-8-BLOOD-8.

After two exciting weekends in the Ocean City, Maryland music scene, I’m overwhelmed by the memories that I was able to make. the music I was able to experience, and the amount of things that I learned! Here are 10 things that I learned from Ocean’s Calling and Country’s Calling…in no particular order.
Walking in the Sand Is Hard
If you know, you know! The schedules allowed for great performers to take on all three stages (Seabright, Rockville, Carousel) (Boot, Scoot, Boogie). But walking back and forth from stage to stage was tough! Especially if you walked from the Rockville Stage to the Seabright Stage several times in the sand. Dodging people’s blankets and sand couches was a feat in itself. But boy was that walk beautiful. And I even got a glimpse at the police horses and the mounting unit. Yes, walking in the sand was hard, but totally worth it!
People In Ocean City, Maryland Love Their Music
Five days of music festivals in two weeks and they always wanted more! Everyone that attended the concerts looked like they were having the time of their lives. Young girls made signs for Riley Green, Lainey Wilson t-shirts were seen for miles, and couples danced in the sand to those memorable songs. Artists came up on stage and rocked the beach, and Ocean City was here for it.
Photographers Are Incredible People
Yes, they get up close and personal at the stage with their cameras. Yes, they get to see the artists they’ve obsessed over growing up. And Yes! They are some of the nicest, creative, and fun people to work with. The photographers for both festivals were beyond talented, top of their field, and still very willing to help me learn something new every day. They’ve shot for icons like Taylor Swift, Billy Strings, Aerosmith, and Stevie Wonder and didn’t bat an eye when I asked hundreds of questions. And for that I am extremely grateful. Thanks guys!
Putting on A Festival is Quite the Operation
As a festival goer, you probably don’t think about the entire “to do” list that goes with running a music festival. From hiring security guards, medics, bartenders, bar backs, stage crew, interpreters, etc. Saying it’s a huge undertaking is a huge understatement. Congratulations to C3 for well planned and smoothly executed 5 days of music.
$16 for a Beer is Worth It
People did complain about the prices of beer. $16 for a regular, $30 for a double. But you’re at a festival. You probably don’t go and do this every weekend (unless you went to both Ocean and Country Calling) but the point is, you don’t do this every day. Relax while you’re there and have a good time- whether you partake in the beer or not.
The Fishing Pier Had a Great View
Once in the festival gates, there were so many places to view the bands. General admission had the entire beach including the Ocean City Fishing Pier. The pier was lined with people from beginning to end all five days. They had a perfect view of the Scoot Stage and could hear the crooning of Clint Black while taking in some of the most beautiful sunsets over Assateague Island.
Ocean City Has a Lot of Bicycles
I’ve seen bikes parked along the boardwalk my whole life, but I’ve never seen so many bicycles in one place like the bike racks outside the concert gates. It seemed to be the most efficient and safe way to get to the beach concerts as people rode south towards the inlet. People locked their bikes up on the racks, light poles, and even the big Coca Cola chair in hopes to find their bikes later on that evening. Bike rental places even capitalized on the event by offering weekend bike rentals or daily surrey rentals. Next year, that’s the way to go.
Rain or Shine- The Show Must Go On
Two years ago, the very first Ocean’s Calling Festival was cancelled due to hurricane type weather. Last year I remember missing Noah Kahan because I went home drenched from rain and this year wasn’t much different- except this year the show went on! Last weekend, Ocean’s Calling’s first day wasn’t the best. It rained, rained some more, and rained even more. Blink 182’s crew began to cover their speakers and electronics and kept the audience in the dark (and a down pour rain- myself included) for 45 minutes before coming on stage. With a modified set list, Blink 182 still performed some of their songs- a lot of people agreed they wanted to hear the most popular ones since they’d been waiting so long. It seemed only fair. But nonetheless, festival goers were lucky enough to still hear their music.
Being Gluten Free Wasn’t Hard
Having food allergies is a challenge when eating out, especially at concerts and festivals. But not here! There were several allergy friendly options for everyone’s taste. I heard that the GF mac and cheese was incredible. By the time I went to get some after Bailey Zimmerman, they were all out- it was the last day of the concert. I learned my lesson to go earlier next year. I also saw GF pizza and noodle dishes that looked divine. I can’t wait to try them all next year. The beer tents also offered seltzers for people who are GF.
A Fun Time Was Had By All
Everyone was there to have a good time! Yes there are always things that can be tweeked- the cluster of people between the bathrooms and the Carousel Stage- yes I got trapped in that area, too. But people laughed, took photos, drank, ate, danced, met up with friends they hadn’t seen in months, took selfies, relaxed, sang their hearts out, spent quality time with their families, and enjoyed what a music festival in Ocean City, Maryland is all about.
Kudos to everyone who made Ocean’s Calling and Country’s Calling possible. Thanks to the boardwalk businesses for taking on the extra steam of people. Thanks to the town for offering such great opportunities for your locals and visitors alike. Thanks to C3 for choosing our great city to host your unforgettable festivals. And thanks to the bands and performers for showing Ocean City, Maryland your love. We can’t wait to see what you bring next year.

As most OceanCity.com followers and attendees are aware, this past weekend’s Oceans Calling, a three-day (September 27th to 29th) music festival came to town. The footprint of the event was located in the southern end of Ocean City on the beach and boardwalk. It was the largest ticketed music festival in the history of Ocean City and all are abuzz! The second largest ticketed event was held last year: 2023 Oceans Calling, but this year there were even more attendees (55,000 vs 50,000). So, let’s recap and review what worked well and share some recommendations to improve future events.
The OceanCity.com Assessment of Oceans Calling 2024
Below are some of our findings based on observations, while attending each of the three days, speaking with festival attendees, monitoring Face Book comments, and getting feedback from several business owners inside and outside of the festival grounds. We have the benefit of last year’s Oceans Calling event for some comparisons. We did review some of the topics we covered last year, but as with an event as large as this one, there are bound to be items that we do not address. But here’s our best summations.
So, Who Attended?
Like last year, this year’s event was a mix of so many groups; from seasoned music festival people to those who had never been. Most were from out of town, as one would expect; from other parts of Maryland, the region and the country. Those who attended the 2023 event and had favorable memories, were here to duplicate the experience, again this year.
Last year, it was stated by the promoter that attendees came from every state in the nation. And let’s not forget that many from the Ocean City area who attended too; people of all ages, including kids and infants!!
What Did Attendees Think of the 2024 Oceans Calling?
Overall, most attendees loved this event. Almost all attendees arrived in good spirits and planned to have a good time over the full three days. For the most part, attendees were respectful towards each other, even given varying weather conditions and the tight personal space at times.
On Friday, the weather was problematic, overcast with some light rain early, followed by a deluge of rain, which came late in the evening hours; this made for memories that will last for a lifetime. Saturday brought beautiful sun shiny skies, followed by Sunday, which was partly cloudy with some strong breezes and enjoyable.
Last year, the weather was misting on the first day (Friday), raining at times on Saturday, but on Sunday the sun came, which made for a grand finale of this inaugural three-day event.
One had to feel a little bad for the attendees that only had Friday passes this year and received the worst of the weather. For those with multi day passes, the weather on Saturday and Sunday felt like redemption for having to get through Friday! But until about 6:30 pm on Friday, the weather held off fine for those to enjoy the music.
The Highs
The music!
Who could not be impressed by the quality and diversity of the music? The headliners of Dave Matthews Band and The Killers delivered as promised, and all the other music proved to be outstanding, too. And if one band was not to your liking, one could venture over to one of the other stages to listen to other performers. National names such as Cage the Elephant, 311, OAR, The Offspring, Mt. Joy, Barenaked Ladies, and so many more performed for this sold-out crowd. And don’t forget the excellent and well received performances of The Beach Boys and Boyz II Men!! Even those performing at the smaller Carousel stage were greatly appreciated by many, such as Sugar Ray, The Revivalists, Grouplove, and Pidgeons Playing Ping Pong.
Forty-five bands to listen to in these three days!! Of course, the weather, a delayed start, and shortened set for Blink 182 on Friday night was frustrating and disappointing to many who braved the poor conditions. In addition, there were several times that the stage sound was not very clear but overall, the performances started on time and were well received.
The Festival Set-Up
Last year, during the planning phase, the organizers of Oceans Calling (C3 Presents) declared that they had substantial experience in running these types of large, music events and they were correct! For the most part the same original layout was retained for 2024. The three stages (Sea Bright, Rockville, and Carousel) were located to allow proper sound distancing from each other and yet not require a long trek to any of them. The set up with the ocean and inlet backdrops, the wide beach, and nearby Boardwalk, brought together all the best attributes that make Ocean City so special to so many. This layout allowed thousands to flow from event to event. However, this year’s larger crowd did present some issues with pedestrian flow and that will be addressed further in this review.
One addition that seemed to work well this year was the dedicated beach towels/blanket areas. They were located in the rear of the listening areas and marked with signs. If one may recall from last year, people were claiming space closer to the stage by laying out their territorial towels and blankets which did cause some conflict with other attendees.
The Festival Amenities
The event provided hydration stations, ample restroom facilities (with flushing toilets, not just your regular porta potties), charging stations for cell phones, lockers, ADA viewing areas, free rides at the Jolly Roger Amusements on the OC Pier, a first aid tent, and more.
Food and drink
There was a wide assortment of both food and drink options again at this year’s event. Some of the prices may have appeared high but not so unaffordable when you think of prices at other comparable, large events. Bonus – for the most part, the beverage lines moved very well.
There was a great selection of food choices near the music venues, including Hebros Cheesesteaks, Hot Box Wraps, Lobster Rolls and More, Pho Cue, San Matteo Pizza, and Wookie Dogs. The lines at these food and drink stands were often not long, depending on the timing, but for the most part they moved fairly well also.
Participation of Boardwalk Businesses
The involvement of the many businesses located south of North Division Street was crucial to the success of last year’s inaugural event and also for this year. The southern end of the boardwalk contains many of the iconic businesses that Ocean City regular visitors come to expect: Dolle’s Candyland, Fisher’s Popcorn, Dumsers Dairyland ice cream, Dough Roller pizza, Candy Kitchen, and more. In addition, festival goers were also able to visit some of the popular downtown bars on and just off the boardwalk that enhanced the festival experience and also enlarged the financial impact of the event to many more.
One could easily see the positive impact on the bars and restaurants that were inside the festival footprint. A little further walk southwards on the boardwalk brought event attendees to Harrison’s HarborWatch Restaurant and Raw Bar and The Wedge Bar with some of the best water views in Ocean City; the Ocean City Inlet, bay and Assateague State Park. Many attendees also frequented The Bar, town’s second oldest bar (1940).
These eateries and bar establishments being in the festival footprint were a vital complement to the event vendors. Their inclusion in the festival footprint, again allowed attendees to be able to have the full Ocean City experience. More importantly, their inclusion provided much of the community and business support to this second-year event.
Entrance and Re-entrance Gates
Accessibility to enter and leave the event was generally very easy, especially during non-peak times. There were two entrance/exit locations; North Division Street and South Division Street. There were numerous gate points to pass through for each entrance. Attendees often arrived around noon to see all of the events, while others arrived throughout the day to see the later music performances. It made for a fairly free flowing movement for most. The ease of re-entry allowed attendees to also visit the nearby downtown businesses and eateries outside of the event footprint. The event was proactive in informing attendees of the very specific bag and item regulations, which was very helpful on the front-end.
Security
The event sponsors and the Town of Ocean City did a good job in making sure the event was a safe. Security personnel inside and outside of the perimeter were visible and friendly. Given this large crowd, I did not see or hear of any confrontations with or police actions. As stated previously, the attendees seemed very flexible, cooperative and pleased to be at this event.
Cleanliness – Last year’s event was well maintained for the most part, but I think cleanliness was even better this year. Trash bags were regularly changed along the Boardwalk and beach area. It felt like there were an army of volunteers (thanks to the Ocean City Surfriders Club and OC Go Green) holding recycle bags and picking up the empty aluminum cans for recycling.
The public restrooms brought in for the event had few complaints with some favorable comments on their cleanliness. Several noted the hand sanitizers did run out of fluid. Others noted rinse stations, rather than hand sanitizers, would have been nice.
Bicycles
And you would have thought Ocean City had become Amsterdam USA with its number of bikes at this event! It was great to have accommodations close to the event (at 1st Street on the beach area) to park and lock one’s bikes. Solid platforms on the beach were provided to place this fencing upon. There was metal fencing to park one’s bikes near the north entrance by 1st Street on the east side of the boardwalk. To say bikers used this facility was a gross understatement. Bikes were also locked and parked along the many Boardwalk benches north of the festival site.
Last year the bikes were simply locked against the parallel fencing which limited such bikes. This year, bikes were locked perpendicular which allowed the storage of many more bikes. It was great to see so many bikers. Biking seemed like the best transportation method, especially if you were several miles away. Bikers were evident traveling to and from all day long; along the Boardwalk, alleys, St. Louis Avenue south of 17th Street, and Coastal Highway. Remember the designated bus lanes on Coastal Highway also serve as bike lanes. Our one concern from last year, was the number of bikes lacking bike lights for improved visibility. Many did bike home along the Boardwalk, which does have lighting but once off the boardwalk, and particularly on the alleys and side streets, it is difficult to see.
This year, the local bicycle companies could see the business sense in promoting their bike rentals as one of the most convenient ways for attendees to travel to and from the event. This method of transportation will only grow in popularity. A larger bike parking facility, near the event, would be welcomed in future events.
Other transportation modes:
Personal vehicles. Many ventured to drive to the downtown area to this event. Public parking filled up quickly and parking lots were charging upwards of $100 per space in the south end. The Presbyterian Church at 13th Street and St. Louis Avenue was requesting a $30 donation to park and at 17th Street and Philadelphia Avenue, Holy Savior Catholic Church was requesting a $10 donation per space. But even these church parking lots filled up, too. Of course, if one waited to the end of the headliner performances, which ended about 11 pm each night, they would expect to sit in traffic for quite a while. Earlier departees fared much better in driving back to their nightly accommodations.
Ride sharing options – this seemed like a mixed bag. The main spot for these users was at the public parking lot at Baltimore Avenue and 4th But others were catching them at other locations, too. There were a number of “gypsy” drivers circulating the area to provide event goers a ride too, for a fee.
Water transportation – there were several area boat providers who “taxied” attendees to and from the event for a specific fee. OC Bayhopper, a local water taxi and water cruise company and Saltwater Adventures transported many people for this event over the three days.
Walking – sometimes the most basic method is often the best. Scores of event attendees walked several miles from the north part of town as well as from the west (over the Route 50 Bridge). They planned to stay in area hotels and residential units within a specific walking proximity. Others walked a distance back to their parked vehicles.
This year’s Major Concern
Crowding
The number one complaint raised by many attendees this year was the number of people at this event. As previously stated, there were 55,000 tickets sold. Last year up to 50,000 tickets were sold, but it just seemed for most there was many more attendees than a ten percent increase.
Not only did the increased number of attendees affect visibility but also affected pedestrian flow; sometimes to the point of being squeezed in by others. This was most evident by the Carousel stage near the Midas trailer on the southside of the event grounds. This area was often full with Carousel stage listeners, but was an exit pathway for the Rockville stage people to get to the nearest restrooms and Boardwalk. This was not as noticeable last year, but with the larger attendance this had the potential of being a public safety issue. Several attendees expressed this fear too.
Would an adjustment of start times between music performances at the Carousel and Rockville stages help this pedestrian traffic flow? We will leave that up to the promoters to figure out, since they have the experience and knowledge, but this one area of conflict does need to be addressed and corrected.
Another observation; the Carousel stage seemed to have very popular bands (i.e. Sugar Ray and Boyz II Men) that overwhelmed this tented area which contained the smallest area of the three stages.
Still needing improvement
Transportation
Bus Service
For those that attended last year’s Oceans Calling, all remember the long bus lines and times lack of service at all, particularly on that first day. There were lots of frustrated attendees, but adjustments were made by the Town’s bus system operators and proactive on informing attendees in how best to get around.
This year’s buses continued to remain full for the most part at peak times, but didn’t seem as bad as last year. Many still voiced complaints about the long waits and overcrowded buses. Most recommended more buses for this event. Were more buses added this year, we don’t know?
There were many that seemed satisfied with the bus service who were able to arrive at low peak times and leave before the end of the evening headline concerts. Again, this year, the Town provided express bus service with limited stops to improve the bus service capacity. Some attendees were not familiar with these limited bus stops for the express buses. But if you were staying or parked within three miles of the event it was probably easier to walk than wait for buses or ride share options.
Cell phone reception
For last year’s Ocean Calling, poor cell phone reception and lack of Wi-Fi was a major complaint and concern for many. This year the event featured two new towers (one Verizon and other AT&T) to help resolve this issue. Reception did appear better, until the most crowded events occurred. Wi-Fi was not existent during the peak concert times and pretty limited elsewhere.
As the event became more crowded there was a noticeable drop off in cell phone reception and transmission at the inlet area. This was true for both Verizon and AT&T customers. Attendees wishing to contact their family and/or friends to meet up or transmit pictures or a video to others not in attendance were left in limbo. As was the case last year, for those who figured it out, it was best to walk back to the Boardwalk and away from the crowds to get reception on their phones. Many just waited until after the event to transmit pictures and videos after leaving the event grounds. Of course, many just scrapped the cell phones and just enjoyed the music. But if you hoped to meet with family and friends, it was best to set a time and location to meet rather than expect to coordinate via phone or text transmission.
Conclusion
Overall, from an attendee perspective and also from an economic perspective, the event was successful. The music was exceptional. The amenities, beverage and food services, and staff were very good.
It was evident that the eateries, bars, and nearby hotels did well. The Oceans Calling event provided a major financial benefit to many – both for employers and employees, and particularly in the downtown area. Last year’s inaugural Oceans Calling music festival was unforgettable to those who attended. Here’s hoping that this 2024 Oceans Calling festival was as memorable to the first-time attendees as well as the 2023 returnees.
The largest complaint was the size of the crowd. Oceans Calling will need to consider the effects of increasing the number attendees in the future and expanding the footprint and spacing of stages, performance timing, and amenities. This should be an important issue for the promoters and Town of Ocean City to ensure that as they “grow” this event, that it not be done by sacrificing its quality. C3 Presents, the company behind Oceans Calling handles the music lineup, setting up, coordinating the logistics, and marketing. Their goal, per its website, “We’re in the business of putting smiles on people’s faces.” And C3 again delivered.
For most, this event was a tremendous experience and attendees look forward to returning to Ocean City in 2025 for the next one.
Up next is Country Calling on same footprint in Ocean City on October 4th and 5th, 2024.
Event Survey
After this event, ticket purchasers should have received a survey from Oceans Calling asking for input. The survey is long but easy to complete. It included questions about your experience at the festival, arrival and departure experience, favorite group, artists you wish to see next year, feelings on personal security, directional signage, expenditures for food/drink/apparel, ticket pricing, and more. We believe the Oceans Calling Festival people are listening, so please complete. It was evident that some adjustments were made from last year.
Here are several select comments from downtown businesses and attendees:
Kevin Gibbs, owner of Dough Roller Restaurant (in festival footprint) – “Oceans Calling is really the best of what Ocean City has to offer. Great boardwalk pizza and subs, treats served fast on the beach, with views you get from no other festival in the country.”
Danny Robinson, owner of Hammerheads On The Beach (on boardwalk but not in festival footprint) –
“I loved how the visitors this weekend weren’t just here to enjoy the festival, but also took advantage of everything this town has to offer. Even though the weather didn’t cooperate the first night, everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves. We couldn’t squeeze another guest in our restaurant from the time we opened on Friday to when we closed Sunday night. Although we were crowded, it was a festive atmosphere with smiles all around. These days our city has to compete with other tourist destinations, like products sitting next to each other on a shelf. I believe this weekend we put on a great show as an event and as a town. Plenty of people made the trip as fans of music, and left as fans of Ocean City.”
Jim Parillo, owner of Big Jim’s Bikes (with 3 locations but outside of the festival footprint) – “I can’t say enough positive things about the customer base during oceans calling. Very respectful, polite, and friendly. Enjoyed working with them and looking forward to next year.”
Kathy Thornton Zynel – from FB – “We had a great time, loved the lineup! An area that needs improvement is the cluster around the Carousel. The artists drew large crowds around the small stage, causing people to pack in and still not be able to see or move to get elsewhere. We needed more space or less people.”
Sokeng Cleary – from FB – “Well done all. It was great. Could tell more bike racks were needed and more buses.”
Philip Jason Butler – from FB – “This local had a blast. My punk/emo heart loved the lineup. “

Fries and beer, wraps and sodas, funnel cakes and lemonade! The ultimate festival food. But Harrison’s Harbor Watch at the very south end of the boardwalk is bringing some upscale dishes to you festival experience. Let’s talk about how the food game is taking it to another notch with Harrison’s Harbor Watch.
Don’t get me wrong, festival food is great! But my stomach can only take so much and after hours of being outdoors and trekking through the sand, I deserve a top of the line meal. Which is why I went to Harrison’s.
Harrison’s is located inside of the Ocean’s Calling Festival area just to the right of the Rockville Stage (If you’re looking at the stage.). We walked pass the Carousel Stage to gain access to the boardwalk and made our way south. After taking in the views of the inlet, we walked int he front door and were greeted by some very lovely ladies who immediately took us to our table. No wait! Our waitress had mentioned that people weren’t sitting for long at their tables because they wanted a good meal but then wanted to quickly rush back to the stages so they wouldn’t miss their favorite band. Smart!
We were looking for both a nice place to sit and see the inlet view but also incredibly delicious food. And that’s exactly that we got! We ordered a beer and soda (beer was half the price from the concert venues- no shame, just facts.) We started off by sharing a hot, steamy bowl of Maryland crab soup which came out with loads of crab meat! My husband even said it was the best crab soup he’s ever had.
It was very challenging to order dinner due to the variety of the menu- seafood, surf and turf, rockfish, shrimp! It all sounded so good. We decided to go with the steamed mussels and lemon basil chicken. The mussels came out piping hot doused in the most creamy buttery garlic sauce that could only be described as heaven! The lemon basil chicken came with a very large portion that also came in a thick white creamy sauce that tasted fresh and delightful. It was exactly that we wanted.
Other decadent menu items include bay scallops, sirloin steak, ahi tuna, and so much more! Click here to see the menu.
We got a fine dining date night, inside of Ocean’s Calling, at the beach- What more could we have asked for?
Have you seen them around the beach? They’re the people usually dressed in black toting around large cameras and backpacks full of lenses, plastic sleeves for rain (we’ve had some) and phone chargers. They’re the photographers of Ocean’s Calling!
Cool, Calm, and Cameras!
They seem to have it all! The cool job, access to the stage, and a cool nonchalant attitude that goes with the job. And it’s true they are a cool group of people. Let’s learn a little about their job and what it takes to be a concert photographer.
Weeks in advance, concert photographers begin reaching out to Ocean’s Calling and public relations contacts for musical artists of Ocean’s Calling asking for permission to “shoot” the concert or musician. Heavy background checks and lengthy examinations of portfolios, Instagram pages, Facebook posts, and websites are considered when choosing who gets to document these incredible performers. And only top of the line photographers are chosen. Once a photographer receives and approval email the real work begins.
Prep Work For Ocean’s Calling
Photographers often study previous shows of artists to learn their cadence, moves, where they might stand or a “special something” they may do on stage. Having previous knowledge of an artist gives them an advantage for location and best shot angles.
Meeting Point: Stage Left or Stage Right
Photographers have a meeting point, either stage left or right, depending on the venue. At the meeting point several photographers assemble waiting for their “escort” to take them to the front of the stage. The rule of thumb is that photographers get to shoot the first three songs then they must leave the front of the stage.
Hours of editing commence after the show to come up with those perfect shots that you see in magazines, online, and news media outlets.
A Quality Team of Photographers: The Best of the Best
This year’s photographers are no strangers to big time acts. This year’s photographers have shot bands such as Aerosmith, Taylor Swift, The Cure, and Marshmello just to name a few. You can see their incredible shots throughout various media outlets including @eatmorebemore, @buckshotmedia, @greco, @mike_amodei, www.shutterup-listen.com, and https://www.bryankremkauphotography.com/.
The highly anticipated music festival in Ocean City, Maryland, Oceans Calling, is making huge headlines. Yes, they have top of the line talent. Yes, they have world renowned chefs. But that’s not the reason for the hype. Oceans Calling is providing equal access to deaf music lovers attending the three day concert by providing sign language interpreters for the shows!
Where Can You See an Interpreter
Looking at the schedule ahead, all three days of the concert have shows where a sign language interpreter will be positioned near or on the stage off to the side, signing the lyrics/ concepts of the songs. Day one of the concert, there will be sign language interpreters for several shows including Phillip Phillips, 311, Sublime, Blink 182, and O.A.R. Day two large names like Switchfoot, Young the Giant, The Beach Boys, All American Rejects, and The Killers will have interpreting services. And the last day of the concert Blues Traveler, Mt. Joy, Counting Crows, Boyz II Men, and Dave Matthews Band will have interpreters.
How Sign Language Interpreters Prepare for a Show
Like any other job, interpreting requires a lot of preparation. We were able to speak to some sign language interpreters and get some insight. Sarah Scarborough, an interpreter of over ten years, tells us- “I spend ALOT of time prepping for shows. I print off scripts or lyrics and then work with my team to divide everything up evenly. If it’s music related, I listen to the songs over and over until I have the lyrics and interpretation memorized.” Interpreter Sheri Levy states that she practices songs as much as possible. If no materials are provided, such as a set list, I do as much research as I can viewing material on YouTube and the internet.” Some shows that Levy and Scarborough have interpreted for are Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Panic! At the Disco, and Jeff Dunham. Both ladies have a background and interest in performing arts, making sign language interpreting a great fit for a career. When asked about the hardest part of the job, Levy says that interpreting unfamiliar material such as sports (for her) is a challenge. Scarborough reveals that keeping your opinion to yourself is hard. Interpreters are there to help facilitate communication between the deaf and hearing world.
Deaf Necessarily Doesn’t Mean Inability to Hear
One might ask, why would someone who is deaf go to a concert? A valid question for someone who is not educated in the deaf community. In reality, thousands of people who are deaf attend concerts around the world every year. When people hear the word “deaf,” they automatically think about the inability to hear.
However when someone is deaf, there is a very large spectrum of hearing loss. Deaf concert goers may have mild hearing loss, wear hearing aids to amplify the music, or may have lost hearing later in life. Others may have lost their hearing at one point in life but not a love for music. Music lover, Rebecca Moir, Deaf hair stylist and owner of Glam by Becca tells us how having an interpreter changes the concert experience for her. “It makes me feel a part of everything. I’m able to see what hearing people hear.” When asked about her first experience at a concert with an interpreter, she told us, “I thought it was amazing!” Rebecca attends several concerts yearly around the Maryland area.
Large concerts like Oceans Calling give off lots of different vibrations around the venue. While deaf patrons may not be able to hear, vibrations from the musical instruments, large screaming crowds, and gigantic speakers and amplifiers add to their experience.

Check out the schedules for Oceans Calling here and look for the little symbol (two f hand shapes connected) for all shows that will have sign language interpreters. And thanks for Oceans Calling for providing access!
Everyone was pumped up and ready for the first day of the second annual Ocean’s Calling Festival 2024 in Ocean City, Maryland. Last year was the first time a large musical event was held in our small beach down and it was unanimous- we wanted more!
Three stages were erected earlier this week, one near North Division Street (Sea Bright Stage), one outside of Trimper’s Haunted House (Carousel Stage), and the last (Rockville Stage) at the very end of the inlet parking lot facing the famous Ocean City Ferris Wheel on the Jolly Roger Pier. This year’s line up promised bigger and better. Here are the top 10 highlights from opening night of Ocean’s Calling 2024 in Ocean City, Maryland
OAR: Crazy Game of Poker Cards
From Rockville Maryland, OAR performed again this year gracing us with their unique voices, stellar trumpet playing, and middle school nostalgia that only us 35-45 year old would understand. When their last song came on, That Was a Crazy Game of Poker, the poker cards began to fly- a tradition that concert goers began years ago.
Winona Fighter: Even Stars Have Parents in the Crowd
The lead singer of Winona Fighter, Coco Kinnon, wowed the crowd earlier in the day on the Sea Bright Stage. Her powerhouse voice and carefree outlook on life clear as she got the crowd going. But the most heart felt part of their set was when Coco gave a shout out to her parents in the crowd for always supporting her dream of being in a punk band. The camera panned over to her mom and dad, her number one supporters. They waved back and mouthed “I love you.”
The Darkness: Bringing Up Recent Ocean City, MD News
At 4:15 at the Rockville Stage, The Darkness, gave an electrifying performance that can only be described as high energy and vibrant. But at one point, lead singer, British musician Justin Hawkins brought up recent Ocean City news. Chatting with the crowd in between songs, Hawkins mentioned the recent drug paraphernalia washing up on shore of our beautiful beaches. Trying to lighten the mood on the situation, Hawkins joked, “I heard that you guys had recently had some drug paraphernalia washing up on shore. To be honest, I was hoping to see some of it- it would remind me of my childhood.” Giving the crowd a laugh, Hawking continued to take the stage and make it his own- at one point doing a head stand and even a high jump that Simone Biles would have trouble doing!
Yes Chef!
Towards the beginning of the day, Jason Biggs, lead actor in the hysterically funny American Pie movies series, emcees the festival. He came out joking with the crowd as he introduced newbee to Ocean’s Calling Exectutive Chef Marc Murphy. Murphy, a star chef on The Food Network, demoed delicious food on The Carousel Stage as fans ooed and aahed! I wonder which restaurants he’s eaten at in Ocean City, MD. What would you recommend?
Where’s Blink 182???
The headliner of Friday’s concert was Blink 182 and let’s be honest, most of Friday’s attendees were there to see Mark, Travis, and Tom. But as their time slot approached, so did the rain…and more rain…and even more rain. Their set was supposed to start at 9:30. Photographers were ushered towards the back tent area to their places and there they waited, and waited, and waited. The crowds were antsy, soaked, and by that point buzzed. Stage hands began to cover electronics as crowds booed since they’d all been standing there for over 30 minutes with no updates about the start time. Rain pelted even harder but lightened up at one point. Around 10:20, Blink 182 took the stage and crowds were thrilled- until the sound was almost non-existent at certain areas of the beach. We made our way towards the back where the sound was way better but the rain had gotten so bad that the vibe was gone. By that time, I had decided to leave knowing that we still had to walk 23 blocks back home. Better luck next time, Blink.
The line up for day 2 of Ocean’s Calling promises to be full of incredible music! By biggest decision of the day though…Do I go to see The Beach Boys or The All American Rejects???
